The interest here lies in the piano rather than in the performer, a restored Collard & Collard square piano of around 1836. Although there is no suggestion that Chopin used it, it approximates to the period in which most of the music here was written. Certainly Peter Katin, who is a highly experienced Chopin player, produces an attractive singing tone in the Berceuse and Nocturne, and he demonstrates the glitter of the upper range in Paganini’s Variations on the “Carnival of Venice” and the Variations brillantes with which he opens the recital. So far as we can judge (with no means of comparison) the 1996 recording, previously available on the Athene label, is admirably truthful.
