Now in their second score of years making music together, described by The Gramophone as “a dazzling husband and wife team” and by International Record Review as “a British institution in the best sense of the word”, leading British piano duo Goldstone and Clemmow consists of internationally known artists ANTHONY GOLDSTONE and CAROLINE CLEMMOW. One of Britain’s most respected
musicians, Anthony Goldstone (“a man whose nature was designed with pianos in mind” - New York Times) has played in six continents and with many leading orchestras and conductors. Caroline Clemmow, described by the Daily Telelgraph as “the ideal chamber music partner”, has travelled widely as soloist and in chamber music, including an extensive tour of the former Soviet Union. As well as their rapidly increasing number of duo recordings (now over thirty), each has recorded widely in other fields.

As a duo their extremely diverse activities in two-piano and duet recitals and double concertos have taken them all over the British Isles as well as to Europe, the Middle East and the U.S.A., their four visits there in five years being rewarded with standing ovations. Their highly praised commercial
recordings include many world premières - for example Rimsky-Korsakov’s own spectacular
version of Scheherazade (with Capriccio Espagnol etc.), hailed by CD Review as “such imaginative, technically commanding performances ... every bit as intoxicating as the orchestral version.” In the four years preceding the millennium they issued no less than thirteen CDs, including “The Virtuoso Piano Duo” (two-piano works by Brahms, Chopin, Gershwin etc.), The Planets in Holst’s original two-piano version, first recordings of Britten, the six double concertos of Soler and the ground-breaking Schubert cycle mentioned below. A recent CD included world premières of authentic four-hand versions of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony and Romeo and Juliet: “mind-blowing ... gloriously played” - The Glasgow Herald; “the impeccable precision, tonal allure and stylish panache of
Goldstone and Clemmow's playing is sheer pleasure” - BBC Music Magazine.

They have made many London appearances, including the Alkan Festival, one of the numerous festivals in which they have featured. Their B.B.C. broadcasts have often included first hearings of unjustly neglected works, demonstrating their enterprising repertoire, mixing famous masterpieces and fascinating rarities, which they frequently unearth themselves, into absorbing and highly
entertaining programmes.

They presented the complete duets of Mozart for the bicentenary (1991); inspired by the success of this venture they decided to take on a much greater challenge - to perform the vast quantity of wonderful music written by Schubert specifically for four hands at one piano. This they first did in 1993 (and have since repeated on three occasions) in a mammoth cycle of seven concerts, which, in its completeness, including works not found in the collected edition, its researched spoken introductions and its original programme format, must surely have been a world first. The world-famous Schubert authority Professor Brian Newbould wrote in The Musical Times of this cycle: “It was an occasion, or rather seven occasions, for adding immeasurably to one’s understanding of
Schubert’s craft as well as his art. The Goldstone/Clemmow performances invited one superlative after another.” All the music was subsequently recorded on seven Olympia CDs, pronounced a “Herculean service to music” by Newbould.

Goldstone and Clemmow have gained a special reputation for their refreshing, enthusiastic approach to concert-giving, including - where appropriate - informal yet informative spoken introductions, and they attach an extremely high value to the warm rapport they create with their audiences.
