Gareth Hancock was born in Worcester. He started playing the piano at the age of seven and flute at 11. His early musical experiences included being principal flautist of the Essex Youth Orchestra and a founder member of the Colchester New Music Ensemble.

He subsequently studied Music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he was a choral scholar, and post-graduate accompaniment at The Royal Academy of Music, graduating with The Recital Diploma

On leaving the The Royal Academy of Music Gareth was trainee repetiteur at English National Opera, where his love of the art form developed. Whilst there he recorded harpsichord continuo in The Barber of Seville for Chandos.

Since then he has worked as a coach, accompanist and conductor with all Britain's major opera companies, working with such conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Andrew Davis and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

He has conducted for Opera North (Madam Butterfly), English Touring Opera (Eugene Onegin, The Abduction from the Seraglio, Rigoletto, Wiener Blut, Carmen), Royal Academy of Music (The Rape of Lucretia) and Glyndebourne Education (Misper). In addition he has recorded Puccini Arias (Chandos) and conducted Alfie Boe's debut disc (Sony BMG/Classic FM).

As recitalist he has appeared at all the major London venues and throughout Europe and the USA, with such artists as Dame Felicity Lott and Sarah Walker. He has also broadcast for BBC Radio 3, Classic FM, Radio France and BBC Radio Wales.

He continues to enjoy a busy freelance career, which includes coaching at The Royal Academy of Music and the young artists' programme at Covent Garden, together with conducting and recitals. He is Music Director of English Music Company and conductor of The London Welsh Chorale.
