Emily Beynon is principal flute of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam. Born in Wales, she began her flute studies as a junior at the Royal College of Music with Margaret Ogonovsky and then went on to study with William Bennett at the Royal Academy and with Alain Marion in Paris. She teaches at The Hague Royal Conservatory & in 2002 was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.

Equally at home in front of the orchestra as in its midst, Emily has performed as concerto soloist with, amongst others, The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, the major BBC Orchestras , NHK Symphony, the Vienna, Prague, Netherlands and English Chamber Orchestras and the Academy of St.Martin-in-the-fields. As a chamber musician she works regularly with her sister, the harpist, Catherine Beynon and the pianist Andrew West, and has made guest appearances with the Nash Ensemble, Skampa Quartet, Steven Isserlis, Dame Felicity Lott, Jean-Yves Tibaudet, the Kungsbacka Trio and Brodsky Quartet.

She has broadcast regularly for BBC radio and has featured in several television documentaries for Thames, the BBC and AVRO (Netherlands) and following her debut CD for Metier, has recorded for Hyperion, Pentatone and other labels. An enthusiastic protagonist of new music, Emily has had many new works written for her, by some of the UK's leading composers: Sally Beamish, Jonathan Dove, John Woolrich and most recently a BBC commission by Errollyn Wallen called "All the Blues I see" written for and premiered by Emily and the Brodsky quartet.

 

   Catherine Beynon took up the harp at the age of eight and became an Exhibitor the Royal College of Music the following year. As an Associated Board Scholar, Catherine studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Daphne Boden, completing the course in two years instead of the usual four. In April 1990 she was awarded her ARCM Diploma with Honours, then continued her studies at the Conservatoire in Lyon.

In 1987 Catherine became the Audi Junior Musician of the Year, and in 1989 was a finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. She has taken part in masterclasses with several leading harpists.

Recital engagements include the UK Harpists' Association, Brighton Music Festival, St. James' Piccadilly and St.-Mart in-in-the-Fields. Concerto performances include Frank Martin's Petite Symphonie Concertante with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Debussy's Dances and Handel's  Harp Concerto.
